Someone asked me why photographers charge the way they do. I thought I’d shed some light on this question that comes up so often.
1. Experience – Years of experience behind the lens means you will get those professionally done shots every single time. The difference between shots taken with your iPhone 6 or Galaxy S6 and a professional grade DSLR is clear.
2. Equipment – Most cameras used by professionals will cost between $2500 and $6700 US before you add lenses which can cost more than the camera body itself (As much as $120,000) and lets not talk about lighting equipment. In other words a lot of money is invested to give you a professional product.
3. Time – Many persons value their own time. The same can be said for photographers. Most shoots take a considerable amount of time (especially those long events). The more time spent, the more a shoot will cost.
4. Artistry – Every photographer is an artist. Whether they shoot indoor, outdoor, underwater, macro, landscape or any of the other forms of photography their camera is a tool that captures a masterpiece and no two photographers perspective is the same. It’s completely normal to meet a wedding photographer that charges $2500 for a wedding or a creative photographer that charges $300 per hour.
5. Overheads – Some photographers actually run studios that incur rent and utilities.
So, the next time you want to hire a photographer to shoot your event for an entire night or to work for you on a monthly basis remember that $500 for an entire night is not that bad and shooting weekly should cost $1000 or more. For the non-photographer hiring a photographer the simple question is would you want your work to be undervalued so that someone can feel as though they saved money while you did the work that was required for your pay? If you love your friendly neighborhood photographer’s work, pay them for their hard work as you do get what you pay for.
